Mesmerizing tunes of Sarod, An Evening with Anupam Joshi in Tokyo

Tokyo, Japan 17 August 2013: Tokyo experienced an evening to the natural notes and tunes of soothing Sarod by Anupam Joshi. The concert took place last evening at Sunamachi Cultrual Center in the Koto ward of Tokyo.
Anupam started the evening with Alaap Jod Jhala in Raag Shree, Gat in Teentaal in Raag Chandranandan and went on to play the final leg will raga Bhairavi. Anupam was accompanied by Anup Joshi on Tabla. The performance mesmerized the audience.

While talking to Anupam, he said that the audience was just right to carry him with the mood to play the music of the soul. Anup storming beat on Tabla towards the end of the event was a feat enjoyed in full with roar of applaud from the audience. The event was conducted by COLORS OF INDIA CENTER JAPAN.

During this trip to Japan, Anupam and his team has represented India and Indian classical music at the world music and dance festival Japan (Hakodate).  They were there for 6 days and played 6 concerts 1 each day. Anupam chose raagas created by Ali Akbar Khan specially to play in Japan.

Anupam had the privilege to play at an old age home. The team played for some senior citizens who were over 100 years old. They enjoyed and were very touched by THE music and they said that our music was very sour touching.

Anupam’s recital on the 6th of August was dedicated to all the souls who lost their life at Hiroshima. They came back to Tokyo and then traveled to Kyoto, Nara, Oosaka and Hiroshima. On the 16th the played at the Embassy of India and dedicated the concert to Indian Independence Day.

Anupam Joshi Profile (Sarod)

Anupam Joshi was under the tutelage of Sitarist Late Pt. Sudhir Phadke for 3 years he could learn many rare Compositions of the legendary Gururma Annapurna Devi. He then came across Ken Zukerman, a senior disciple of the Legendry Ustad Ali Akbar Khan who was also a faculty at Ustad Ali Akbar Khan Institute (Switzerland). Then Pandit Sohan Neelkanth, who resided in Ahemadabad, Gujarat and is a disciple of Pandit Rajeev Taranath, showed the willingness to teach Anupam and he started taking his authentic taleem under Pt. Sohan Neelkanth in Ahmadabad.Anupam was later on recommended to continue his further studies from Pt. Rajeev Taranath and Pt. Tejendra Narayan Mujumdar who are two of very senior disciples of Ustaad AliAkbar Khan.


Anup Joshi Profile (Tabla)

Anup Joshi is an electronics engineer by qualification and a percussionist by choice. Anup started learning Tabla at the age of ten. He was first introduced to the tabla by Mrs. Varsha Godbole and Dr. Dhananjay Patkie. After listening to Ustad Zakir Hussain, he was immensely inspired and learned the fundamentals of rhythm from Zakirji’s father, an eminent tutor - Ustad Alla Rakha. He has been learning from Ramdas Palsule and from Tabla Maestro Ustad Zakir Hussain for last ten years.

Anup founded and established SoundScapeS (www.soundscapes.co.in), a fusion band, ten years back and has been consistently performing in corporate sector. Anup is also a founder member of the percussion fusion band – TRIAUM (www.triaum.com) and has performed in various concerts all over India. He has collaborated with bands like TRIOTONOS, an international jazz band; TALAASH, a sufi band known for their originals; EMPTY CAFE, a blues-funk-fusion band; to name a few. Anup got chance to represent India at Gul-e-Surkh International Music Festival, Afghanistan in 2008. He has been involved as recording artist for short films and documentaries. In 2010, Anup has been featured in a German documentary on Tabla titled ‘tha-ki-ta-tha’. In 2002, Anup started ‘Tabla and Beyond Music institute’, an institute where students of music gather to learn, to create and to spread happiness (https://sites.google.com/site/tablaandbeyond/). He has also conducted workshops and clinics on ‘Rhythm related topics’ for IT professionals, schools and NGOs.
