13 September, 2012   COLORS OF INDIA NEWS AND MEDIA SERVICES

Kolkata, Sept 12 (RDI IBNS): Prayag United, India's premier I-League club, defeated Peerless SC with three super goals in their last match of the Calcutta Football league held at Yuva Bharati KrirangaThis was their third win in the series where the team played over all four matches.

Prayag United found the lead early when junior striker Md. Rafiq scored a magical corner shot leading to a goal in the 24th minute, giving a sign of relief to skipper Deepak Mondal.

The team's chances for victory doubled when ace international striker Ranti Martins gave the brightest move by scoring the second goal in 42nd minute just before the break.

The third goal from the Costa Rican midfielder Carlos Hernandez in the 69th minute sealed the victory for the team today.

At the other end Peerless SC had a penalty claim in the 72nd minute where footballer Wahed scored the first goal for his team.

Though Peerless SC had their own game strategy in place, but it was Prayag United who snatched the game away with national champions Gouramangi Singh and Subrata Pal posing a real threat to the opponent players.

Overwhelmed by the victory and the performance of the team, Avik Bagchi, Football Secretary, Prayag United SC, commented, "It is a proud moment for the team. They played very well. This was an important match as this was the last match prior to the Federation Cup."

"The coordination between the players was good and it reflected in the game today. New inclusions of Subrata Pal and Gouramangi certainly added value to the performance of the team.

"Lester Fernandez and Zakeer Mundampara marked their debut for Prayag United and displayed outstanding performances. Lester showed great zeal playing in the left wing," he said.

"However the penalty shot could have been avoided with a focused defence, but the boys put up a good show. Rafiq played a different game giving the team a remarkable lead. And as far as the gaps are concerned it will surely be considered to focus in the future games," he added.

Prayag United's strong defence line was a big intimidation for Peerless SC on Wednesday.

Towards the end of the second half Md Rafique from Prayag SC was replaced by Sankar Oran, whereas Carlos Hernandez was replaced by Zakeer.

Commenting on the performance of the squad, Coach Sanjoy Sen, Prayag United SC, said, "Today's match brought forward some brilliant individual feat, but there are still high scopes for improvement. Gouramangi and Subrata are players of national stature who seemed to gel well with the rest of the squad.

"We witnessed a slow pace in the last 20- 30 minutes as there was a communication gap between the players. The performance needs to be upped more considering the potential of the team. We have a more important matches coming up - Federation Cup, our next key target."
